About Our Kerala Folk Tales

Kerala has a deep storytelling culture shaped by its backwaters, paddy fields, coconut groves and monsoon seasons. Many families still remember tales told by a grandmother on the veranda in the evening, often about clever village people, talking animals, river spirits or the trees every household depends on.

The stories in this section are written by our team in that spirit. Some draw on familiar themes from Kerala village life, such as harvest time in Kuttanad, fishing on Vembanad Lake or the many uses of the coconut tree. Others are original tales set in those places. They are not presented as historical records, but as warm, readable stories that capture the feel of the region.

Because these stories mention local places, food and customs, they are also a gentle way to introduce children growing up outside Kerala, including Malayali families in the Gulf and abroad, to the landscape their parents and grandparents knew.

Reading tips for parents and teachers

  • Look up the places mentioned, such as Vembanad Lake or Munroe Island, on a map together.
  • Ask grandparents whether they heard similar stories when they were young.
  • Use the Malayalam words in the story as a small vocabulary exercise.
